Olympic medal is a form of Olympic motivation method that reward athletes with medals. It is provided by the organization committee of each Olympic Games, but is owned by the International Olympic Committee and awarded by the International Olympic Committee to the winner athletes.

History

When the first modern Olympic Games were held in Greece in 1896, only the first and second winners won the Olympic medal. The winner won a silver medal and the runner-up won a bronze medal. In 1928,a Italian artist Giuseppe Cassio Olli designed a symbolization of victory for the Olympic medal.

Since 1972, Cassioli's design has been used for the front of the medal, while the back is designed by the organizing committee.

The medals for the 1984 Summer Olympics used the medal made by Los Angeles. The medal pattern has been in use even since.

Standard

The both sides of medals from 1928 to 1968 were designed by the artist Du Sturm, who was hired by Cassie committee, the medal’s diameter was 60 mm and thickness was 4 mm. The champion's gold medal contained 6.5 grams of 24K gold. The medals were placed in a small blue velvet box to prevent them from damage.
