Some Famous Olympic Medals

The first Athens Olympic Games in 1896

the champions were awarded a silver medal, an olive branch wreath and a certificate. The runner-ups were awarded a bronze medal, a laurel wreath and a certificate.

The front of the medal is the head portrait of Zeus, the main god in Greek mythology. Zeus holds an earth on his hand, and the Greek goddess of victory stands on the ball. The back of the medal is the Acropolis ruins, printed with the Greek word "1896 Athens International Olympic Games".

The 19th  Mexico City Olympics in 1968

The front of medal stands the traditional goddess of victory. She holds the palm leaf on her left and the corolla worn by the winner in her right hand. The image of the goddess of victory in this Olympic Games was designed by the Florentine artist Cassioli and was selected as the uniform front pattern of the Olympic gold medals in the design competition organized by the International Olympic Committee.

On the right side of the medal, the words "Los Angeles 1932 - 10th Olympic Games" are engraved on the background. The background is the Colosseum pattern.

On the back of the medal, an Olympic champion is surrounded by the crowd, and the scene is rejoicing. The background is the Olympic Stadium.

From 1928 to 1968, the Olympic medal style has used the 1928 design. Until the 1972 Olympics, the then Munich Organizing Committee broke through the original design and adopted the design of the Bauhaus-style representative Gerhard Marcks to change the pattern on the back of the medal.

The front of medal sits the Nike goddess lifting the garland of honor over the top of the head, holding a bouquet of palm leaves symbolizing victory. Next to her is a Greek-style jar, and the bottom is the branch of the Australian national flower acacia tree.

On the back of the medal, the waves of Sydney Harbour water connect the Sydney Opera House and the torch of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and the Olympic rings cover the center.

The medal is 68 mm in diameter, 3 mm thick at the thinnest edge,the thickest part of the medal is 5 mm thick. The gold medal is plated with at least 6 grams of pure gold on pure silver.

The silver medal is made of pure silver material. The bronze medal is made of old coins and has a little silver inside. The line that hangs the medal on the athlete has the words "Sydney 2000", which is blue-green with a flowing waterline.

The 29th Beijing Olympic Games in 2008

The medal for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is 70 mm in diameter and 6 mm thick. The front of medal is the International Olympic Committee's uniform pattern - the Greek goddess of victory and the Panathinaiko Arena in Greece. The back of the medal is inlaid with the jade from the ancient Chinese dragon-shaped, at the centre, it is engraved with the emblem of the Beijing Olympic Games.

The medals for the Beijing Olympic Games are 70 mm in diameter and 6 mm in thickness. The medals are created from the ancient Chinese dragon-shaped jade sculpt, which is composed of the materials of “golden” and “jade” that symbolize dignity and virtue. It reflects the values and honors of the Chinese nation.
