The four famous embroideries of china refer to Su embroidery, Xiang embroidery, Yue embroidery, and Shu embroidery.

Su embroidery

Su embroidery is a general term for embroidery products centered on Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The legend is derived from the granddaughter of Zhongyong . In the ancient Jiangnan area, the people had the custom of tattooing a dragon on the body. Zhongyong was in power of Wu and wanted to get rid of this bad habit. His granddaughter named Nvgong invented a embroidered dragon pattern on the clothes to replace the tattoo. In order to commemorate the inventor of embroidery, the folks still regard women's activities in textile, sewing and embroidery as needlework.

Suzhou is located in the south of the Yangtze River. The birthplace of Su embroidery is in the Wu County of Suzhou. It is adjacent to Taihu Lake and is rich in silk. Therefore, it is known that women there are good at the embroidering. The superior geographical environment, the splendid brocade and the colorful threads have created favorable conditions for the development of Su embroidery. In the long-term historical development process, Su embroidery has formed a local style with beautiful patterns, harmonious colors, bright lines, lively stitching and exquisite embroidery. It is known as the “Pearl of the Orient”.

Yue embroidery

Guangdong embroidery is the general name of Guang embroidery and Chao embroidery. The production center based on Guangzhou and Chaozhou in Guangdong Province. It has a history of more than 1,000 years.

The history of Guang embroidery’s earliest record can be verified in the Tang Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty Sue's "Duyang Miscellaneous" records that Lu Meiniang, a 14-year-old girl from the South Sea of china, embroidered the "Fa Hua Jing" on a 7-feet long silk in the palace. The words are drawn clearly and as fine as the hair. It can be seen that Nanhai County (now Guangzhou) in the Tang Dynasty has skilled embroidered women. In the Ming Dynasty, Guang embroidery began to gain the approval of foreigners. In 1514, the Portuguese bought the embroidered piece of robes in Guangzhou and returned to the country. The king was satisfied with the gift and rewarded them, thus the good reputation of the Guang embroidery was passed to Europe. The embroideries were exported to foreign countries massively.

Later, Guang embroidery opened up foreign trade activities. Queen Elizabeth I personally advocated the establishment of the British Embroidery Association. They organized the emperor's embroidered workshop in the form of Guang embroidery workshop, they hired many men workers just as Guang embroidery. Royal embroidery workshop imported silk and silk thread from China, processing embroidered aristocratic costumes. King Charles I mobilized the national to raise silkworms. At that time, Guang embroidery was praised by Western scholars as "China's gift to the West", The museums of English, French, Germany, and the United States all have a wide collection of embroidery.
